What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction can be used to remove fatty deposits from a number of problem areas. Although liposuction is most commonly used on the abdomen and hips, it may also be used on the thighs, buttocks, calves and arms. Liposuction is also frequently used in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures including breast reductions and tummy tucks.

Why do I need to be in my ideal weight range for liposuction?

Liposuction is intended to remove stubborn fat deposits; it is not intended as a weight-loss procedure. Generally speaking, patients should be within 10 percent of their ideal body weight. Your consultation with board-certified South Carolina plastic surgeon Dr. Ted Vaughn will determine that liposuction is the best treatment for your specific condition.

Are there risks associated with liposuction?

Complications with liposuction are rare, but include scarring, infection and skin rippling. During your consultation and exam, Dr. Vaughn will ensure that you are a suitable candidate for liposuction and will discuss the potential risks with you.

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?

Liposuction recovery varies by individual and depends on a number of factors including your overall health and the extent of your liposuction treatment. Most patients are able to return to work and light daily activities within a week. Most lingering bruising and swelling dissipates within a few weeks, and you will likely need to wear a compression garment during the initial weeks of your recovery period. Dr. Vaughn will thoroughly review your recovery guidelines with you prior to your liposuction procedure.

Are the results of liposuction permanent?

Liposuction results in the removal of a substantial number of fat cells from your body. However, remaining fat cells can expand and cause weight gain if you do not maintain a balanced diet and exercise. Healthy lifestyle choices will help ensure you maintain the results of your liposuction procedure from years to come.
